How to Use the North Node Calculator?

  • Enter your birth date. Day, month and year of birth.
  • Enter your birth time. Use the time on your birth certificate if you have it. If you don’t know it, an estimate still gives your North Node sign in nearly all cases (see the FAQ below), but your house placement needs an accurate time.
  • Choose your birth city. Start typing and pick your city from the list. The tool uses it to apply the correct historical time zone.
  • Read your result. You get your North Node sign, its degree, your house placement and your South Node.

What Is the North Node in Astrology?

The North Node (☊) is not a planet. It is a calculated point in your birth chart, and it comes from the Moon’s orbit. The Moon’s path is tilted about 5 degrees to the path the Sun appears to take across the sky (the ecliptic), so the two paths cross at two points. The point where the Moon crosses going north is the North Node. The opposite point, where it crosses going south, is the South Node (☋). Solar and lunar eclipses happen when the Sun and Moon meet near these points, which is why astrologers have long treated them as significant.

In modern astrology, the North Node is read as a direction of growth. Your Sun, Moon and Rising sign describe who you are and how you naturally operate. Your North Node describes the qualities and experiences astrologers associate with development, often the ones that feel unfamiliar or uncomfortable at first. It is also called the Lunar North Node, the Dragon’s Head or the True Node, depending on the source.

North Node vs South Node

The two nodes always sit exactly opposite each other, so your South Node is your North Node sign’s opposite sign. If your North Node is in Aries, your South Node is in Libra. If it is in Taurus, your South Node is in Scorpio, and so on.

  • South Node: what feels familiar, natural and well practiced. It is a strength, but leaning on it too heavily can keep you stuck in habits.
  • North Node: what feels new and less comfortable, but is associated with growth and long-term fulfilment.

Astrologers usually read the two together as one axis, not as “good” and “bad” points.

Mean Node vs True Node

There are two ways to calculate the North Node.

  • Mean Node: a smoothed average of the node’s position. It moves steadily backward through the zodiac.
  • True Node: the node’s actual, instant position. It wobbles slightly around the mean position.

The two differ by up to about 2 degrees. That means they give the same sign for almost everyone. A difference only shows up if your North Node is within a couple of degrees of the start or end of a sign. Our calculator uses the Mean Node, a widely used standard. If another chart shows a slightly different degree, it is most likely using the True Node.

How to Find Your North Node Manually?

If you already have a birth chart, you can find your North Node without a calculator:

  1. Look for the symbol ☊ (a small horseshoe shape with two circles). Some charts label it “NN”, “North Node” or “Node”.
  2. Read the sign it sits in and its degree.
  3. Read the house number where the symbol falls.
  4. Your South Node (☋) is exactly opposite it, in the opposite sign and house.

If you don’t have a chart yet, the calculator above gives you the answer in seconds. To see every planet and point at once, generate your full birth chart.

North Node Signs and Their Meanings

Here is a short guide to each North Node sign, its South Node and its traditional ruler.

  • North Node in Aries (South Node in Libra), ruled by Mars. Growth comes through independence, initiative and acting on your own wants instead of defaulting to keeping the peace.
  • North Node in Taurus (South Node in Scorpio), ruled by Venus. Growth comes through stability, patience and building steady security, and less through intensity and crisis.
  • North Node in Gemini (South Node in Sagittarius), ruled by Mercury. Growth comes through curiosity, listening and learning, not through certainty about what you already believe.
  • North Node in Cancer (South Node in Capricorn), ruled by the Moon. Growth comes through emotional openness, nurturing and belonging, and less through self-reliance and status.
  • North Node in Leo (South Node in Aquarius), ruled by the Sun. Growth comes through creative self-expression, confidence and letting yourself be seen.
  • North Node in Virgo (South Node in Pisces), ruled by Mercury. Growth comes through practical skill, routine and useful service, and less through escapism and vagueness.
  • North Node in Libra (South Node in Aries), ruled by Venus. Growth comes through partnership, cooperation and considering other people’s needs alongside your own.
  • North Node in Scorpio (South Node in Taurus), ruled by Mars and Pluto. Growth comes through emotional depth, honesty and learning to let go of what no longer serves you.
  • North Node in Sagittarius (South Node in Gemini), ruled by Jupiter. Growth comes through big-picture thinking, exploration and finding meaning, and less through collecting endless small details.
  • North Node in Capricorn (South Node in Cancer), ruled by Saturn. Growth comes through responsibility, structure and long-term goals, and less through comfort and other people’s approval.
  • North Node in Aquarius (South Node in Leo), ruled by Uranus and Saturn. Growth comes through community, originality and shared causes, and less through the need for personal validation.
  • North Node in Pisces (South Node in Virgo), ruled by Neptune and Jupiter. Growth comes through intuition, compassion and trust, and less through perfectionism and over-analysis.

North Node in the 12 Houses

Your sign shows how your North Node’s growth theme feels. Your house shows where in life it plays out. A North Node house also needs an accurate birth time.

  • 1st house: self-direction, independence and starting things on your own.
  • 2nd house: self-worth, personal values and earning through your own effort.
  • 3rd house: learning, communication and your local community.
  • 4th house: home, family and emotional foundations.
  • 5th house: creativity, romance, play and self-expression.
  • 6th house: daily routines, health habits and skilled work.
  • 7th house: committed partnerships and cooperation.
  • 8th house: intimacy, shared resources and personal transformation.
  • 9th house: beliefs, travel, higher education and worldview.
  • 10th house: career, public role and long-term ambition.
  • 11th house: friendships, groups and future goals.
  • 12th house: solitude, spirituality, rest and letting go.

Your South Node sits in the opposite house, so a North Node in the 1st house means a South Node in the 7th, and so on.

North Node Sign by Birth Date

The North Node moves backward through the zodiac and spends about 18 months in each sign. It completes a full trip around the chart in roughly 18.6 years. Use this table for a quick look-up. Dates are approximate (based on the Mean Node), so if your birthday falls close to a change of sign, use the calculator above for an exact result.

What Is a Nodal Return?

A nodal return happens when the transiting North Node comes back to the exact position of your natal North Node. Because the cycle takes about 18.6 years, it happens around ages 18–19, 37, 56 and 74. Astrologers treat these ages as turning points where questions of direction and purpose tend to come up. Use the calculator above to get your natal North Node, then compare it with the current position to see when your return is due.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is my North Node?

Your North Node is the sign and house where the Moon’s North Node was located at the moment you were born. Enter your birth date, time and city in the calculator above to find out.

How do I find my North Node?

The fastest way is to use a North Node calculator like the one on this page. You can also read it from a birth chart by looking for the ☊ symbol and noting its sign and house.

Do I need my birth time to find my North Node sign?

Usually not for the sign. The North Node moves slowly, about 3 arcminutes per day, so it stays in the same sign for around 18 months. Your birth time only affects the sign if you were born on the exact day the North Node changed signs. The calculator asks for your birth time because your house placement needs it, since houses change every few hours. If you don’t know your birth time, enter 12:00 PM and treat the house as approximate.

What house is my North Node in?

The calculator shows your North Node house as part of your result. The house shows which area of life your North Node’s growth theme is most active in, such as career, relationships or home. It uses the Whole Sign house system, where the sign of your Ascendant is your 1st house. Other systems, such as Placidus, can place the node in a different house in some charts.

What is my South Node?

Your South Node is always in the sign and house directly opposite your North Node. It represents familiar strengths and habits, and the calculator shows it alongside your North Node.

Is this North Node calculator accurate?

Yes, provided the birth details you enter are correct. The sign and degree come from established astronomical formulas (the Mean Node), and your house is worked out using the correct historical time zone for your birth city, so results stay accurate for older birth dates as well.

Is the North Node a planet?

No. It is a mathematical point where the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic. It has no physical body, but it is used in astrology as a sensitive point in the chart.

Where is the North Node right now?

The North Node moved into Aquarius in mid-2026 and stays there until roughly early 2028, when it moves into Capricorn.

Is the North Node calculator free?

Yes. You can calculate your North Node as many times as you like, and you can also check the North Node of a partner, friend or family member using their birth details.

What is the difference between the North Node and the Moon sign?

Your Moon sign is where the Moon itself was in the zodiac when you were born and describes your emotional nature. The North Node is a point derived from the Moon’s orbit and describes a direction of growth. They can be in the same sign, but they are different things.
