What Is the Part of Fortune in Astrology?
The Part of Fortune is a calculated point in your birth chart, not a planet or a star. It marks where your body, circumstances and everyday wellbeing tend to flow most easily. In astrology it is often read as the place where life feels supported, where things “fall into place,” and where you can recharge.
Ancient astrologers called it the Lot of Fortune (Greek: Klēros Tychēs, Latin: Pars Fortunae, or Pars Fortuna). It was among the most important points in Hellenistic astrology and is discussed by writers such as Vettius Valens and Ptolemy. Medieval Arabic and Persian astrologers later expanded the idea into many “lots,” which is why you may also see the term Arabic Parts or Arabic Lots.
It is a tool for reflection, not a promise of luck. Your Part of Fortune describes a theme in your chart; it does not predict lottery wins or financial outcomes.
How Our Part of Fortune Calculator Works?
- Enter your birth date, birth time and birth city.
- The calculator finds your Sun, Moon and Ascendant using astronomical algorithms, including the correct historical time zone for your birthplace.
- It checks whether you were born in the day or at night, then applies the matching formula.
- You get your Part of Fortune sign and degree, and the house it falls in.
Part of Fortune Formula (Day and Night Charts)
The Part of Fortune is found by measuring the distance between the Sun and Moon, then measuring that same distance from your Ascendant.
- Day chart (Sun above the horizon): Ascendant + Moon − Sun
- Night chart (Sun below the horizon): Ascendant + Sun − Moon
Example (day chart): Ascendant 15° Libra, Sun 10° Leo, Moon 20° Taurus. The Sun is above the horizon, so we use the day formula: Ascendant + Moon − Sun. Result: 25° Cancer.
The formulas flip between day and night because, in the traditional view, Fortune is tied to the Moon and the body, while its counterpart, the Lot of Spirit, is tied to the Sun and the mind. Some modern astrologers use the day formula for every chart; our calculator follows the traditional day/night method.
Part of Fortune vs Lot of Spirit
The Lot of Spirit uses the same three ingredients with the formula reversed. Where the Part of Fortune describes your body, circumstances and what happens to you, the Lot of Spirit describes your mind, purpose and what you choose to do. Together they form a pair: Fortune is the receiving side, Spirit is the acting side.

Why Your Birth Time Matters?
The Part of Fortune is built on your Ascendant, and the Ascendant moves through the zodiac about 1° every 4 minutes. A birth time that is 20 minutes off can shift your Part of Fortune by around 5°, enough to change its sign or house. If you were born close to sunrise or sunset, a small time error can also flip your chart from day to night and change the formula entirely.
For the most accurate result, use the time from your birth certificate. If you only know the approximate time, treat the house placement with caution and focus on the sign.
The Part of Fortune Symbol
The Part of Fortune is drawn as a circle with a cross (an X) inside it. In many chart wheels you will see it written as ⊗. Chart software may display it slightly differently, but it always appears as a circled cross.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my Part of Fortune?
You need your Ascendant, Sun and Moon positions. For a day birth, add your Ascendant and Moon, then subtract your Sun. For a night birth, add your Ascendant and Sun, then subtract your Moon. The easiest way is to enter your birth details in the calculator above.
Is the Part of Fortune the same as the Lot of Fortune and Pars Fortuna?
Yes. These are different names for the same point: the Part of Fortune (English), Lot of Fortune (Hellenistic term) and Pars Fortuna or Pars Fortunae (Latin).
Is the Part of Fortune a planet?
No. It is a mathematical point calculated from the Sun, Moon and Ascendant. It has no physical body, but it is included in many natal charts as an interpretive point.
Do I need my exact birth time?
Yes. Without an accurate birth time your Ascendant, and therefore your Part of Fortune, cannot be placed correctly. See “Why Your Birth Time Matters” above.
What does the Part of Fortune mean in my chart?
It points to where you tend to feel supported and at ease. The sign describes how fortune arrives, and the house describes where in life it shows up.
Does the Part of Fortune mean I will be rich or lucky?
Not literally. It is a symbolic marker of wellbeing and natural flow, not a guarantee of money or luck. Use it as a prompt for reflection about where life feels easiest for you.
What is the difference between the Part of Fortune and the Lot of Spirit?
Fortune reflects your body and circumstances; Spirit reflects your mind and purpose. They use the same points with the formula reversed.
Is this Part of Fortune calculator free?
Yes, it is completely free to use.
